CommuniquÃĐ of the Emergency Meeting of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM –MIPREDA) on 1st February 2024 (virtual – Zoom technology)

The Chairperson of the Honorary Advisory Council (HAC) of the African First Ladies Mission (AFLPM-MIPREDA) convened an emergency Assembly Meeting to discuss the appointment of a Vice President and other related issues on the future of the Organization based on the provisions of Article 17 (4) of the Charter of the African First Ladies Peace Mission.

In attendance were the members of the Honorary Advisory Council, Current First Ladies and Past First Ladies of African States.

Having extensively discussed the leadership and future of AFLPM-MIPREDA the following decisions were made and are to take immediate effect.

Members therefore nominated the following:

  1. H.E Mrs. Fatoumatta Bah Barrow, First Lady of the Republic of The Gambia, as President of AFLPM-MIPREDA
  2. H.E Mme Fatima Vila Nova, First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Soa Tome and Principe as Vice President of AFLPM-MIPREDA

The Assembly further nominated

H.E Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, a Former First Lady and the Former Vice President of the Republic of Liberia as the Executive Secretary who will assume Office under the new nomenclature of SECRETARY – GENERAL of the African First ladies Peace Mission.

With this new leadership in place, the Assembly is confident that a new dawn has emerged for AFLPM-MIPREDA.

The Assembly concluded the meeting by asserting that, the urgency of peacebuilding cannot be overstated and AFLPM-MIPREDA is committed to working assiduously toward the Mission, Vision and Strategic objective of the Organization for the promotion of peace, stability and development in Africa.

H.E Mrs. Aisha Buhari the Former First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairperson of the Honorary Advisory Council (HAC) of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) (MIPREDA), joined Women Leaders at the 4th High-Level Africa Forum on Women, Peace and Security held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 13-14 December 2023.

H.E. Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the Former First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairperson of the Honorary Advisory Council (HAC) of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) (MIPREDA), joined influential women leaders and other high power delegations from various African countries at the 4th High-Level Africa Forum on Women, Peace and Security held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 13-14 December 2023.

The forum themed “To Enhance Women’s Participation and Leadership in Peace and Security Processes in Africa,” was convened by AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, Madam Benita Diop under the leadership of H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

H.E. Mrs. Aisha Buhari spoke on “Promoting Cooperation Across Political and Civil Society Spaces to Enhance Women’s Participation in Peace and Political Processes; Challenges and Opportunities”.

During her virtual address, on December 13th, 2023, H.E Mrs. Buhari expressed her delight being a part of the forum and addressed the challenges in enhancing women’s participation in peace and political processes globally and suggested recommendations for government and policymakers to consider.

The Africa First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) held a meeting of its Technical Advisors at the AFLPM Headquarters, Abuja, Nigeria on August 1, 2023. The teams are composed of Technical Advisors from the offices of the AFLPM President, Her Excellency, Mrs. Angeline Ndayishimiye and the Chairperson of the AFLPM’s Honorary Advisory Council, Her Excellency, Mrs. Aisha Buhari. The meeting was aimed at ensuring the smooth transition of the leadership of AFLPM and charting a way forward for the Peace Mission.

Africa First Ladies Peace Mission 10th General Assembly Summit and Official Commissioning of AFLPM Secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria.

Her Excellency, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the outgoing President of the Africa First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM), had the honour of hosting African First Ladies at the AFLPM 10th General Assembly Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria on 8th May, 2023.

Following the Summit, the AFLPM Secretariat building which was built under the leadership of Her Excellency, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, was also commissioned.

Her Excellency, Mrs. Angeline Ndayishimiye, First Lady of the Republic of Burundi, emerged the new President of AFLPM, while Her Excellency, Mrs. Khadija Mabruke Bazoum, the First Lady of the Republic of Niger, is the new Vice President of the Mission. Her Excellency, Mrs. Aisha Buhari will now assume the position of the Chairperson of the AFLPM Advisory Council.

The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the African Union and AFLPM to ensure effective coordination and support towards Peace building on the continent.

Ahead of the official commissioning of the Africa First Ladies Peace Mission Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, the Nigerian First Lady and AFLPM President, Her Excellency, Dr. (Mrs.) Aisha Buhari, on 19 April 2023, paid an inspection visit to the AFLPM Secretariat building which commenced immediately after her election as the President of AFLPM. The Africa First Ladies Peace Mission(AFLPM) received a delegation from the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat. The team was led by H.E. Amb. Bankole Adeoye, the commissioner Political Affairs, Peace and Security.

Her Excellency Dr. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian First Lady and President of the Africa First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM), received a delegation from the African Union Commission. The purpose of the visit was to hold discussions with the AFLPM team on some topical issues relating to the consolidation of AFLPM's achievements and improvement on its operations across the continent of Africa, as well as involvement of women generally in peace building in Africa. The AU team was led by H.E Amb. Bankole Adeoye, the Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace and Security. During the visit, the team made out time to inspect the Headquarters building of AFLPM currently at 90% completion.

The Africa First Ladies Peace Mission in collaboration with the office of the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Aisha M. Buhari, and the UNFPA held a High-Level Event on the margins of the 77th UN General Assembly with the theme “The Roles of Young Women and Girls in Advancing Peace and Security: Promoting a Culture of Peace in Fragile settings.

The event called on stakeholders to accelerate efforts to end all forms of Gender-Based Violence in the Sahel region and its environment while re-iterating the importance and benefits of the meaningful participation of young women and girls in the Sahel as Peacebuilders. The event also commended the contribution of Africa First Ladies and their partners in advancing Women’s development for Peace, Security, and development.
