The Executive Secretary of the AFLPM, Mrs. Oley Dibba-Wadda attended the African and Asian Parliamentarians' Meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 20th to 22nd June 2022. The conference held was to follow up on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD25) commitments. The Meeting aimed at discussing integration of ICPD Programmes of Action into national laws and policies.

Aisha Buhari Welcomes Liberian Vice President, Calls For Action Over Women Representation

First Lady, Federal Republic of Nigeria and President, African First Ladies Peace Mission, Dr. Aisha Buhari has called for more concerted action towards better recognition of the contributions that women make in national development, saying power-sharing arrangement must reflect this both within political parties and in government. She was speaking while receiving the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday 17 January 2022.

The First Lady said, “From the Political Party level to Government, within the Executive and Legislature the sharing arrangements is abysmal and something must be done to change this narrative. We have to adopt better strategies to maximize elective positions and other opportunities for Nigerian women.”

Mrs. Buhari expressed the belief that the record of Dr. Taylor as a former First Lady, a professional in politics, a parliamentarian, and her work on education, social projects, and health in Liberia belies the fact that Nigerian women have gotten the right ally and partner for this important task. She further notes that her visit to Nigeria for this important occasion underscores the importance she attaches to the development of women in general and African women in particular.

Earlier, the Vice President of Liberia, Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor said she was in Nigeria to attend the Progressive Women Conference of the All People’s Congress. She stated that Nigeria sets the pace in the West African sub-region in terms of politics, therefore she needs to key in and share experiences for the benefit of African women.

Dr. Howard-Taylor further called on women to pay more attention to legislative seats because that is where laws are made, and that is where budgets are approved for girl child education, HIV/AIDS, for social networks. She called on women to find their way to the decision-making table.

The event was attended by the wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, the chairperson of the Progressive Women Conference, Mrs. Stella Okotete, and Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Executive Chairman, Nidcom, Hon. Abike Dabiri- Erewa, Hajiya Aisha Aminu, and Mrs. Irene Irabor.

While the visiting Vice President was accompanied by Deputy Ministers of Health and Labour, Mrs. Norwu Howard and Mrs. Yvette Freeman respectively.

The 9th Summit of the African First Ladies Peace (AFLPM) was held on 22^nd November, 2021, at the Conference Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Nigeria.
The Summit was attended by the following African First Ladies:

(2) Her Excellency Rebecca Akufo-Addo, First Lady of the Republic of Ghana

(4) Her Excellency Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of the Republic of Sierra-Leone

The First Lady of Nigeria, H.E. Dr. Aisha Buhari delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of convening the Summit at this very critical moment that Africa is faced with challenges of violent conflicts, natural disasters, climate change, and COVID 19 pandemic.

The Summit was declared open by the Special Guest of Honour, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Appraised the conflict situations in Africa in view of rising threats to peace and security as occasioned by violent conflicts, terrorism, COVID 19 pandemic, and climate change.
Noted the escalating threats of insecurity and violence have continued to affect development and heightened poverty and deprivation with depressing effects on women and children that bear the greatest consequences.
Further Noted that these rising threats to peace, security and development point to the important role of women, especially the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) in confronting the existential socioeconomic challenges, which provides the drive for the intractable violent conflicts and violent crimes across African communities.
Resolved to elect H.E. Dr. Aisha MuhammaduBuhari, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the 9^th President of AFLPM. The newly elected President accepted the onerous task placed on her by her colleagues and pledged to discharge it with utmost commitment, honesty, humility and inclusivity.
Resolved to commit towards resource mobilization for the construction of the Permanent Secretariat of AFLPM in Abuja, Nigeria, and appreciated the Nigerian Government for its support for the provision of land, the Interim Secretariat, and among others.
Agreed to expedient action on the Draft Constitution of the AFLPM and circulate to all the African First Ladies for their considerations and necessary inputs.
Called for support and assistance of Africans, international organisations, development partners and other critical stakeholders towards the actualization of the vision and mission of AFLPM.
